Exodus is chock full of action, suspense, intrigue, miracles, struggles, trials, travels, destinies, subplots and so much more.  It’s a book many of God’s people are relatively familiar with and yet, it’s a book where many of God’s people follow the same exact missteps. Through the years, it’s grabbed the attention of Hollywood’s movie makers and yet, over time it seems to have settled in as just another neat story tucked in that archaic Old Testament.  Instead of seeing ourselves within its pages, we remain softly blind to how strangely similar we engage in our present activities with the same attitude that these people of old flashed in their day.  We spot their grumblings and murmurings but gloss over our own criticisms and complaints.  We recognize hypocrisy in them but ignore it in ourselves.  We marvel how they missed God and yet we live life often without God.  They were given a paper copy of the law in their hands and yet we were given a permanent copy written on our hearts.  Perhaps we would do well to remind ourselves again of Jesus’ words:

“To whom much is given, from him much more will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.”

                                                                                                                                    (Luke 12:48)

While they were given partial revelation, we have been given complete revelation.  As we venture into the campground of this book, may God help us to connect our heads and our hearts, their choices and our choices, their God and our same God.  It is a study which shall impress upon us the very character of God amidst the fickleness of men – men much like you and me at times!  It is a study to “ramp up” our worship and take down our altars.  Indeed, it is a book that we have so much to learn from.  The Apostle Paul said as much when he gave this counsel to the New Testament believers about the Old Testament events:

“Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come.  Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”                                           (1 Corinthians 10:11-12)
