We decorate the house, we wrap the gifts, we prepare the baked goods, we check our schedules, we prepare for the visit of extended family members, we makes plans to attend the service the night before and then it arrives – Christmas. The day we celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Most believe that Jesus breathed his first breath in a stable in the town of Bethlehem. His existence began through this incarnation as God became man. Yet the Bible reveals His preexistence in the Old Testament in numerous appearings, including to Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, and David. This was His “pre-incarnate” existence; that is, His existence before the incarnation.
Yet Scripture also asserts that Jesus exists eternally. Before the foundations of the world were established, He was there. In fact, He Himself erected those foundations! He had no beginning because He is the beginning. Without Him there is no beginning, let alone anything in creation.
Let’s be careful we don’t simply reduce Jesus is something less than Who He is. Yes, He limited Himself when He took on flesh and blood and became a man. That in itself is mind boggling. But before the “birth” of Christ at Christmas, He already was. He is the great “I Am.” He is before all things and in Him all things consist (Col. 1:17). What a Savior – the eternal God!
