The Bible warns that wars and rumors of war point us to the latter days (Matthew 24:6). As evil marches onward in this fallen world, as nation clashes against nation, and as world political leaders attack other leaders, we sense the end is near. And rightly so.
But in our fixation upon such things we see may be the temptation to minimize what we do not see. In other words, the seen becomes greater and the unseen lesser. Such a focus may lead us to walk by sight and not by faith.
While earthly wars do occur and will occur until Christ returns, we ought not forget the greater wars. Every minute of every day, spiritual battles evolve around us. Wickedness and darkness in the spiritual realm continue. This, beloved, is the more essential war to engage in.
Do not think for a moment that man is the great enemy. Though we all have foes in this life, our far greater enemy is not man but Satan. He is a roaring lion seeking to devour us. He relentlessly and deceptively seeks to carry out his strategy of dividing the body of Christ and attacking us in such isolation.
Now more than ever, the church must unite and see anew the real opponent. It is not other believers who may have differing views or even the unsaved masses around us. Our opponent is that slippery serpent who first tempted Eve. Be wise, not unwise.
