Seldom do things just happen instantaneously from our human vantage point. Indeed, that hole in the back yard took hours to dig, that trip across the country took weeks to complete, that painting on the wall took days to create, that harvest in the garden took a season to grow, and that young adult now leaving your home took a lifetime to raise.
Indeed, time is a necessary ingredient in real change. The same is true when it comes to the ultimate change, a spiritual one. However, this once-for-all work of God called salvation was actually decreed before time. Yet from our view, it’s a process that includes the prayers of loved ones, the faithful witness of a few, the challenges of life, and the conviction of sin.
Taken together, salvation is a point-in-time act that encompasses a lifetime of activity. Whether at the age of six or the age of sixty-six, multiple seeds are planted in the ground of that individual’s life which ultimately bring forth the response of repentance and belief one day.
Even when your sharing with an unbeliever does not seem to yield fruit, know that God will plant this seed in the heart of that person. Even though you may think that little to nothing was accomplished spiritually, know that your work in the Lord is not in vain. In due time you will reap if you do not faint. Press on as you share the cure this darkened world so desperately needs.
