The Dispensation of Grace

A dispensation is best defined as a system or framework in which the gospel works in this present time. In Ephesians 3, the Apostle Paul uses the...

No Repeats Necessary

Many things in life are repetitive.  No sooner have you finished the last item on the “to do” list then a new list is handed to you with virtually the same items.  Wouldn’t it be great if there were more items that you could do just one time and check it off completely?  And yet, two thousand years, something extraordinary did occur …  ONCE FOR ALL

The Forgotten One

The most extensive section in the Bible about the Holy Spirit flows from the lips of Jesus. He Himself benefited greatly from the Spirit’s ministry. So if He depended upon, was empowered by, and gave utmost attention to the Holy Spirit, should not His followers?

Not Yet Home

How others perceive you as a follower of Jesus Christ should concern you. We certainly do not want our testimony, our witness, to be like a bull in a china shop or an alien visit from another planet or a condescending look as far superior. But we ultimately do not control what others think of us.

John 15:18-25

Connecting Upward

We’re blessed in this life to have many relationships along the way. From neighborhood friends to college roommates to work associates to church acquaintances, we were truly created as relational beings. Yet there’s one bond we have that should immeasurably exist above all the others.

Grow Up!

Unlike spring, our growth in God should not occur just once every four seasons. Yet just as sure as plant life surges forward as spring approaches, our spiritual life ought to do so on a continual basis as we pursue after God.

Fully Equipped for the Trip

Everyone is on a spiritual journey that finds each of us at different points along the way. For the follower of Jesus, the road ahead comes with all we need to travel that road. God never calls you to do what He has not equipped you to do.

Lean Forward

Got trouble? Everybody does. It’s part of the package deal in a world that’s broken ever since the first sin in the first garden. This “Law of Entropy” afflicts as people, places and things wear out, thin out, fade out and eventually die out. Fortunately, Jesus also faced this and He leans in with encouraging counsel to His followers.

Stand Straight

Life happens. We’re actively living for God as we motor down the highway. But without a moment’s notice, we find ourselves incapacitated on the side of the road as cars zoom by and we sit idly by. Truth is, every one of us will experience lulls and breaks and quandaries along the spiritual route as we seek to live for Jesus.

That's Odd!

Since life overflows with such paradoxes, it should not surprise that the Bible includes ironies. John 13 recounts one of the more recognizable narratives as Jesus washes the feet of His disciples. The Creator stoops before the created. The Holy One sanitizes the soles of His unholy ones.

Now Trust Me

The primary emphasis in this miracle of crossing the Jordan River is its fascination with the “Ark of the Covenant.” You simply cannot walk away from a reading of Joshua 3 & 4 without an awesome appreciation for this mobile dwelling place of God, a position which He maintains throughout the Old Testament with His people.

Not Very Glamorous

The Master serves His followers by stooping to a most menial mission of removing the soot from the lowest part of the human body. The Creator of the world bows before the created of the world to clean their grime. This is our model.

How Precious

Though we may differ in skin color or shoe size or eye shape or body mass, we stand as equals in one race. Consequently, we ought to yield unending respect toward each and every human since each and every human is created in the very image of God.

Really Different

The Bible continually announces that history is His story as it centers upon a great God while inviting us to join in His amazing, incredible, flawless, perfect blueprint. Indeed, our lives are best showcased when they evidence His work in us and through us which brings the greatest glory to Him.

Born to Live

Salvation is by grace through faith and this passage provides a beautiful picture of the meaning and transforming experience we have from our former self to a new creation in Christ. Through salvation, Christ has truly given us a new beginning and the ability to live a more meaningful and productive life.

Somebody Cares

The tension heightens as the crucifixion nears. Knowing His hour has come and His end just ahead, He arrives. Experiencing the wicked glares and the evil sneers, He makes His public appearance. Incredibly, the portrait that emerges stuns the onlookers.

Stuck in a Rut

We look in the mirror and know in our heart that something isn’t quite right. Something isn’t aligning. So we make a list and checking it twice, set out to do something about it. Unfortunately, we soon get disillusioned when little seems to change and we find ourselves exactly where we were last year. We’re getting nowhere fast and we know it.

Unfinished Business

How encouraging for parents to see the fruition of their labors when the child finally “gets it.” When something actually penetrates and isn’t quickly rejected. Ah, the joy of parenting. Our Heavenly Father isn’t entirely different, although His parenting is flawless and His view longer-term.

What Consumes You

An incredible miracle fills the air in Bethany as a banquet begins. What a striking snapshot! Martha is serving, Lazarus is fellowshipping, Mary is sacrificing, and Jesus is present. This is worship! Unfortunately, things can change quickly.

Don't Believe That

Instead of acceptance of the gospel as the norm, rejection is more prevalent. Instead of most people believing the gospel, most people disbelieve it. There’s a reason why Jesus spoke these sobering words: “Wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

(Matthew 7:13-14)

When Life is Hard

Because the Bible is authentic, it does not sidestep difficult matters but confronts them. In fact, the ultimate stresser of death appears in the opening pages, yet Scripture does not ignore or sugarcoat it.

Superhero Power

Our world desperately needs real superheroes – spiritual superheroes. Into this broken, hopeless, desperate world, you bring the good news. But to share and to live the good news, you need superhero strength to impact the universe. That source of power is faith, for without it, you cannot please God and you cannot make an eternal difference.

Listen Up (2)

Far more often then we care to admit, awkward moments find us – and we’d rather they didn’t! But a sovereign God has a plan and as the initial uncomfortableness passes, a significant point emerges.

A Game Plan

The moment Adam and Eve disobeyed, they introduced sin into this world and what ensues as a result – trouble. Jesus Himself said that every day has its own share (Matthew 6:34). But for the believer, there’s an added challenge – opposition to Christ. How shall we react?

The Ultimate Praise

There are many times in our life when it is very easy to get down. Our attitudes reflect the challenges, downfalls and problems that we encounter. But the reality is that as children of God, we have much to be thankful for, and the perspective of praise will enable us to have the eternal viewpoint we need

You're So Bright

A change in the background can impact what’s in the foreground. A dismal, dark backdrop surrounds Jesus as the unbelieving stand before Him. So it will be for all believers. What will you say? What will you do when that happens?

Perfect Harmony

The Father and the Son are one – one God. The scriptures deliver expert testimony of this authentic relationship (John 10:30; Hebrews 1:3; Colossians 1:15; Philippians 2:6). This impeccable alliance takes center stage in John 10 as Jesus has a table talk with the religious leaders about this topic. It’s not so well received by them but it should be by you.

Who is He?  2

We need not guess or speculate or theorize regarding the life and purpose of Jesus Christ. Instead of watching a movie about Him or reading a commentary about Him or listening to people talk about Him, we need only open the Bible to discover first-hand His real identity.

Finding Joy in Suffering

Until you really know someone, you really don’t know someone. Your initial observations may be incorrect. Simply judging a book by its cover is usually inaccurate – and dangerous. That said, no one ever was more misunderstood and misrecognized then Jesus Christ.

Where Are You Going?

Jesus: “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14) Two paths lead humanity in two entirely different directions! WHICH DOOR HAVE YOU ENTERED?

Take Another Look

What you see isn’t always what you really see – or what others see around you. Two people can look at the same exact picture at the same exact time and yet walk away with two different observations. So it is with life. Various understandings clog the human highway!

Two Equals One

It’s easy to lose perspective, enlarge our circumstances, and fixate on the minutia in the midst of life in a fragmented world. Thankfully, God breaks in to alter our orientation of life and adjust it toward a far greater purpose. He leans in with the gift of Himself to invigorate, energize and rearrange our depleted altitude and our dejected attitude.

A Powerful Influence

Satan doesn’t wait on the sidelines. Do not underestimate the influence of this diabolical persuader of evil. Though a defeated foe, he seeks to wreak havoc and invite dissention and encourage conflict. He is no friend to Christianity as walks about as a roaring lion, seeking who he may devour.

A Powerful Influence

From cover to cover, the Bible does not ignore the reality of Satan and his scheming on this earth.  The scriptures weigh in as they paint his devious portrait through occasional appearances and vivid descriptions.  And in a prolonged dialogue with the Jews, Jesus leans in with pointed words about this deliberate detractor of the Christian faith and his influence with humanity.

You Can Know

While things are often not as they seem in this life, there need be no guesswork or conjecture when it comes to heaven. God did not send His only Son into this world as a gift to never discover. His life, death and burial were never intended to be a secret. So too, you can know your eternal standing.

Overcoming Faith

Ever feel overwhelmed by everything that goes on in this world. For the believer, this world can seem like it is winning the battle but when we live a life of obedience to God’s Word, we can experience the live of God that enables us to have victory over the challenges of this world.

A Divine Abuse

There are any number of things in life you can mishandle that will bring great trouble. Yet while such matters are mainly temporal, when we mishandle what the Bible says, the consequences are vastly greater!

Someone Who Really ‘Gets You’

The Gospel of John incorporates a number of awkward interactions where the Son of God encounters the sons of men and they walk away confused and perplexed. The Light shines into darkness and the darkness just doesn’t get it – not that they want to get it.

What Light Do You Shine?

While each of us may have several extraordinary experiences sprinkled in our life, we do live in the arena of ordinariness. Think about how many routines you instinctively exercise every day. And yet, as a follower of Christ, your marching orders are to salt your bland earth and light your dull world.

A Lonely Landscape

This is the morning man looked into the tomb where Jesus laid and discovered: He is not there; He is risen! The resurrection tilts the perspective 180 degrees as the brightness of the Son banishes the haunting clouds of death. All is not lost. Hope has not departed. Its Resurrection morning and He is alive.

What Do You Say?

Counsel comes to us from many different venues in addition to the licensed, professional ones: from magazines to columnists to friends to acquaintances to television shows to advertisements to siblings to self-help groups. Whose counsel are you really listening to and living by?

But What If?
“What ifs” can take you on a very unsettled rollercoaster ride! Indeed, they can make mountains out of mole hills and quickly sink your mental ship. Unfortunately, we’ve all been there and allowed a few to grab the upper hand.

Options Galore

Life isn’t always black and white, so choices and decisions arrive at a moment’s notice pressing you for a response. No one knows all the details at all times, so you have to make a determination – one you then must live with.
